Before attempting to do anything with your wood paneling be sure to clean it. However some paneling is installed and stuck on walls using nails and or adhesive tape. In this case you cannot remove the paneling as you will just damage the surface. When you re ready to start painting make sure that your paneling is made of solid wood.

Mask any areas you wish to protect such as vents doorways or windows with painters tape. To check if your paneling is indeed made of wood sand a small area on the wall. Fill any holes or cracks with wood putty using a putty knife and allow it to dry. Fill and sand the wood.

Some paneling actually consists of a vinyl print that simulates the look of wood. When you have decided to start painting make sure that your paneling is made of solid wood. After you have cleaned your wood paneling i recommend sanding the surface to really get rid of any gloss and etch the surface for painting. Caulk around the trim.
